Information infrastructure development efforts are usually large endeavors that involve many stakeholders, including several organizations that need to interoperate with legacy systems. Projects typically take several years to develop. The duration, variety, and sites of engagement in the development of information infrastructures can be challenging to approach with typical CSCW approaches. In this paper, we compare and analyze our varied experiences in order to generate lessons learned based on being embedded for three or more years as action researchers and ethnographers in infrastructure development projects in the domains of traffic engineering, vocational education, and ocean science. Drawing upon these experiences, as well as literature in infrastructure studies, design methodologies, and organizational studies, we extract guidance for researchers and practitioners seeking to understand and engage in long-term organizationally complex system development projects. Among these lessons, we encourage revisiting previously gathered data as scope and scale change, observing changes in the discursive \"reference public\" who will benefit from the system, and planning for different intellectual points of entry and exit. This paper lays groundwork for future developments in theory and method of collaborative design and development in and with complex systems.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3579502","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,4,16]],"date-time":"2023-04-16T17:23:07Z","timestamp":1681665787000},"page":"1-35","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["Lessons Learned from a Comparative Study of Long-Term Action Research with Community Design of Infrastructural Systems"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"7","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3484-997X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ridley","family":"Jones","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0760-474X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Cathrine F.","family":"Seidelin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Novo Nordisk, Copenhagen, Denmark"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0148-1171","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Andrew B.","family":"Neang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7884-2978","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Charlotte P.","family":"Lee","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,4,16]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","volume-title":"Revolutionizing science and engineering through cyberinfrastructure.
