A Dutch nonprofit, Public Spaces, has developed a self-audit method for documenting dependencies on such tools and working to find values-consistent alternatives. The Public Spaces Digital Power Wash is a method applicable to other tensions between organizational values and values embedded in digital tools. We expand from this specific case study to consider the larger challenge of tensions between organizational values and the behavior of digital tools and examine the possibility that values-led organizations could take the lead in building digital public infrastructures that value the autonomy and privacy of citizens.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3582578","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,2,13]],"date-time":"2023-02-13T13:06:30Z","timestamp":1676293590000},"page":"1-13","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Creating PublicSpaces: Centering Public Values in Digital Infrastructures"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"4","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1098-1618","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Geert-Jan","family":"Bogaerts","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"VPRO, PublicSpaces"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0499-9045","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jos\u00e9","family":"van Dijck","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Utrecht University"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5970-9116","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ethan","family":"Zuckerman","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Massachusetts Amherst"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,6,14]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_2_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1467-9760.2006.00235.x"},{"key":"e_1_3_2_3_1","article-title":"China harvests masses of data on Western targets, documents show","author":"Cadell C.","year":"2021","unstructured":"C.
