Emerging studies have shown that neurofeedback training (NFT) games are an effective and playful intervention to enhance social and attentional capabilities for autistic children. However, NFT is primarily available in a clinical setting that is hard to scale. Also, the intervention demands deliberately-designed gamified feedback with fun and enjoyment, where little knowledge has been acquired in the HCI community. Through a ten-month iterative design process with four domain experts, we developed Eggly, a mobile NFT game based on a consumer-grade EEG headband and a tablet. Eggly uses novel augmented reality (AR) techniques to offer engagement and personalization, enhancing their training experience. We conducted two field studies (a single-session study and a three-week multi-session study) with a total of five autistic children to assess Eggly in practice at a special education center. Both quantitative and qualitative results indicate the effectiveness of the approach as well as contribute to the design knowledge of creating mobile AR NFT games.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3596251","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,6,12]],"date-time":"2023-06-12T18:58:16Z","timestamp":1686596296000},"page":"1-29","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":25,"title":["Eggly"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"7","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0008-7730-8552","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yue","family":"Lyu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7705-2031","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Pengcheng","family":"An","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4972-4870","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yage","family":"Xiao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0001-8578-6449","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Zibo","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0001-0373-8241","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Huan","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9642-9666","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Keiko","family":"Katsuragawa","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Research Council, Waterloo, ON, Canada and University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5008-4319","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jian","family":"Zhao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,6,12]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s10803-011-1345-3"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3290605.3300266"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1176\/appi.books.9780890425596"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.neuron.2019.11.001"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.15585\/mmwr.ss6706a1"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_6_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s00787-011-0208-y"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_7_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/BF02212194"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_8_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1192\/bjp.175.5.484"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_9_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/MPRV.2018.022511239"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_10_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.bandc.2007.03.004"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_11_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.tics.2013.04.009"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_12_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/jcal.12617"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_13_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1467-8535.2012.01379.x"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_14_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/10983007030050010101"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_15_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Chien-Hsu Chen I-Jui Lee and Ling-Yi Lin. 2016.
