These problems will worsen as the number of connected devices grows to one trillion by 2035. Energy harvesting, battery-free devices offer an alternative. Getting rid of the battery reduces e-waste, promises long lifetimes, and enables deployment in new applications and environments. Unfortunately, developing sophisticated inference-capable applications is still challenging. The lack of platform support for advanced (32-bit) microprocessors and specialized accelerators, which can execute dataintensive machine-learning tasks, has held back batteryless devices.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3599184.3599186","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,5,22]],"date-time":"2023-05-22T23:52:21Z","timestamp":1684799541000},"page":"5-10","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Protean: Adaptive Hardware-Accelerated Intermittent Computing"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"27","author":[{"given":"Abu","family":"Bakar","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Rishabh","family":"Goel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jasper","family":"de Winkel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Delft Delft University of Technology, Delft, Netherlands"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jason","family":"Huang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Saad","family":"Ahmed","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Bashima","family":"Islam","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Przemyslaw","family":"Pawelczak","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Delft University of Technology, Delft, Netherlands"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Kasim Sinan","family":"Yildirim","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Yildirim University of Trento, Trento, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Josiah","family":"Hester","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,5,22]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3560905.3568561"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"Proceedings of the 15th ACM Conference on Embedded Network Sensor Systems, 1--13","author":"Hester Josiah","unstructured":"Josiah Hester , Kevin Storer , and Jacob Sorber .
