While it is still essential, disinfection use is declining with the decrease in perceived personal risk (e.g., as a result of vaccination). Thus this work explores using different visual cues to act as reminders for hand disinfection. We investigated different public display designs using (1) paper-based only, adding (2) screen-based, or (3) projection-based visual cues. To gain insights into these designs, we conducted semi-structured interviews with passersby (N=30). Our results show that the screen- and projection-based conditions were perceived as more engaging. Furthermore, we conclude that the disinfection process consists of four steps that can be supported: drawing attention to the disinfection station, supporting the (subconscious) understanding of the interaction, motivating hand disinfection, and performing the action itself. We conclude with design implications for technology-supported disinfection.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3604251","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,9,13]],"date-time":"2023-09-13T15:16:20Z","timestamp":1694618180000},"page":"1-18","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Don't Forget to Disinfect: Understanding Technology-Supported Hand Disinfection Stations"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"7","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0978-517X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jonas","family":"Keppel","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0007-1040-9175","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Marvin","family":"Strauss","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1755-1717","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sarah","family":"Faltaous","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6923-9066","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jonathan","family":"Liebers","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6705-2145","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Roman","family":"Heger","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5671-1640","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Uwe","family":"Gruenefeld","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0132-4934","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Stefan","family":"Schneegass","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,9,13]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/2807442.2807490"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.20961\/smbr.v6i2.57401"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1093\/cid"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/SITIS.2013.150"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","volume-title":"Proceedings of Workshop on Experiencing Interactivity in Public Spaces (EIPS), CHI'13","volume":"2013","author":"Bird Jon","year":"2013","unstructured":"Jon Bird, Daniel Harrison, and Paul Marshall. 2013.
