A framework for a systematic research program for evaluating the effectiveness of expert system user interfaces is proposed. Based on this framework, the research examines the impact of knowledge presentation format (procedural vs. declarative) for system explanation facilities, user skill level, level of task uncertainty, and decision-making process on the decision-making performance of system users. Empirical assessment of a computer diagnostic expert system, developed using the Expert System Environment (ESE) shell, and implemented within an international computer manufacturer, is conducted.
