However, the estimation of calories burned during exercise is inaccurate and cannot be used for medical diagnosis. In this work, we present JoulesEye, a smartphone thermal camera-based system that can accurately estimate calorie burn by monitoring respiration rate. We evaluated JoulesEye on 54 participants who performed high intensity cycling and running. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of JoulesEye was 5.8%, which is significantly better than the MAPE of 37.6% observed with commercial smartwatch-based methods that only use heart rate. Finally, we show that an ultra-low-resolution thermal camera that is small enough to fit inside a watch or other wearables is sufficient for accurate calorie burn estimation. These results suggest that JoulesEye is a promising new method for accurate and reliable calorie burn estimation.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3631422","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,1,12]],"date-time":"2024-01-12T12:52:04Z","timestamp":1705063924000},"page":"1-29","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["JoulesEye"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"7","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8089-9498","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Rishiraj","family":"Adhikary","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"IIT Gandhinagar, Gandhinagar, India"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2848-1574","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Maite","family":"Sadeh","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Cornell University, NY, United States"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0736-7169","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Nipun","family":"Batra","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IIT Gandhinagar, Gandhinagar, India"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1237-7545","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Mayank","family":"Goel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Carnegie Mellon University, PA, United States"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,1,12]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/ACCESS.2021.3066166"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3544548.3581265"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/JSEN.2021.3072607"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1049\/iet-cds.2016.0143"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3404482"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_6_1","volume-title":"IEEE INFOCOM 2016-The 35th Annual IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications.
