We introduce a series of speculative and deconstructive probes and present findings from their use in four collaborative design sessions. We then draw on the theoretical tradition of Agonism to identify moments of friction, refusal, and disagreement over the course of these sessions. We contend that this approach offers a politically important alternative to consensus-based collaborative design methods and can even surface new rhetorics of contestation within discourses on technology futures. We conclude with a discussion of the importance of worker-authored research and an initial set opportunities, challenges, and paradoxes as a resource for future efforts to \"Design for Agonism.\"<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3641001","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,4,29]],"date-time":"2024-04-29T10:05:31Z","timestamp":1714385131000},"page":"1-25","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["Designing for Agonism: 12 Workers' Perspectives on Contesting Technology Futures"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"8","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8872-2889","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Felicia S.","family":"Jing","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Responsible and Inclusive Technologies, IBM Research, Yorktown Heights, NY, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7531-4421","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sara E.","family":"Berger","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Responsible and Inclusive Technology, Exploratory Sciences, IBM Research, Yorktown Heights, NY, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0488-8898","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Juana Catalina","family":"Becerra Sandoval","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Responsible & Inclusive Technology, IBM Research, Yorktown Heights, NY, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0009-2490-7276","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Kristin","family":"Pepper","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, New York, NY, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0001-5053-6300","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"April M.","family":"Wheeler","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, City Needed, NM, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0000-8514-1408","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Paula Redondo","family":"Mayoral","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, Amsterdam, Netherlands"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0001-4229-9157","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Divya","family":"Lokesh","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, Kochi, India"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0003-1300-9987","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Alice","family":"Feng","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, Yorktown Heights, NY, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0007-9689-3315","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Marija","family":"Mijalkovic","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, Markham, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0004-1574-419X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Chaoyun","family":"Bao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, Armonk, NY, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0004-0338-3980","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sara","family":"Dholakia","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, Austin, TX, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0006-4627-2134","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Mohit","family":"Goyal","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM, Gurgaon, India"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,4,26]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/MSPEC.2022.9976479"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"Scientific Cosmology and International Orders","author":"Allan Bentley B","unstructured":"Bentley B Allan. 2018.
