However, previous TMD studies mainly focused on improving detection performance and have not investigated the social implications of mobility information. This is the first study to use TMD to predict the life satisfaction of wheelchair users. Our goal is to develop TMD for wheelchair users (wTMD) utilizing smartphone location data and apply it to determine how transportation behaviors affect the life satisfaction of wheelchair users. First, we propose a wTMD technology by collecting a new dataset from wheelchair and non-wheelchair users. Second, we conduct regression analyses on existing in-the-wild dataset of wheelchair users. The result shows that the portion of subways in an individual's travel time is directly connected to wheelchair users' life satisfaction in Seoul, South Korea. We hope our findings are a good example for future social science studies and ultimately help to design wheelchair-friendly urban planning and accessibility.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3643506","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,3,6]],"date-time":"2024-03-06T13:12:36Z","timestamp":1709730756000},"page":"1-20","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["Transportation Mode Detection Technology to Predict Wheelchair Users' Life Satisfaction in Seoul, South Korea"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"8","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2685-5544","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sungjin","family":"Hwang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Hanyang University, Department of Computer Science, Seoul, Korea, Republic of"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5766-5981","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jiwoong","family":"Heo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Hanyang University, Department of Computer Science, Seoul, Korea, Republic of"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3279-8080","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Youngwug","family":"Cho","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Hanyang University, Department of Computer Science, Seoul, Korea, Republic of"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2885-0627","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jucheol","family":"Moon","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"California State University Long Beach, Computer Engineering and Computer Science, Long Beach, California, United States"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0002-9920-8743","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yushin","family":"Lee","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Hanyang University, Department of Sociology, Seoul, Korea, Republic of"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4618-0441","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Hansung","family":"Kim","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Hanyang University, Department of Sociology, Seoul, Korea, Republic of"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4869-901X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jaehyuk","family":"Cha","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Hanyang University, Department of Computer Science, Seoul, Korea, Republic of"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4184-2058","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Kwanguk","family":"Kim","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Hanyang University, Department of Computer Science, Seoul, Korea, Republic of"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,3,6]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3200\/JOER.102.4.303-320"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0967-070X(03)00052-0"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.trc.2017.05.003"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3390\/ijerph16214282"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/PERCOMW.2018.8480119"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_6_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3090054"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_7_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/02185385.2015.1027951"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_8_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.trc.2017.11.021"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_9_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.tra.2017.09.024"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_10_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1475-6811.2001.tb00037.x"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_11_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/2470654.2470744"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_12_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/2517351.2517367"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_13_1","unstructured":"Jiwoong Heo Sungjin Hwanga Jucheol Moon Jaehwan You Hansung Kim Jaehyuk Cha and Kwanguk Kim.
