In our work, we address this issue through in-depth interviews with twelve audio designers working in the games industry. Through thematic analysis and content analysis, we show that principles of juicy design also apply to audio and sound design, and that it is applied intentionally to improve player feedback and experience. On this basis, our work contributes a conceptual foundation for juicy audio in its key factors of emphasis\/augmentation, cohesion\/coherence, and synesthesia. We identify associated attributes and provide implications for the design of games that seek to leverage juicy audio as a means of improving player experience.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3677084","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,10,15]],"date-time":"2024-10-15T12:14:13Z","timestamp":1728994453000},"page":"1-28","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":8,"title":["Juicy Audio: Audio Designers' Conceptualization of the Term in Video Games"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"8","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6046-5454","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Kieran","family":"Hicks","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Staffordshire University, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, United Kingdom"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5958-3576","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Katja","family":"Rogers","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8449-6124","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Kathrin","family":"Gerling","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4290-8829","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lennart E.","family":"Nacke","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,10,15]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","unstructured":"Ernest Adams. 2014.
