In multi-pedestrian settings, two challenges emerge: ensuring unambiguous communication to individual pedestrians via external Human-Machine Interfaces (eHMIs), and the influence of one pedestrian over another. We conducted an experiment (N=25) using a multi-pedestrian virtual reality simulator. Participants were paired and exposed to three distinct eHMI concepts: on the vehicle, within the surrounding infrastructure, and on the pedestrian themselves, against a baseline without any eHMI. Results indicate that all eHMI concepts improved clarity of communication over the baseline, but differences in their effectiveness were observed. While pedestrian and infrastructure communications often provided more direct clarity, vehicle-based cues at times introduced uncertainty elements. Furthermore, the study identified the role of co-located pedestrians: in the absence of clear AV communication, individuals frequently sought cues from their peers.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3678506","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,9,9]],"date-time":"2024-09-09T14:36:21Z","timestamp":1725892581000},"page":"1-26","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":17,"title":["Evaluating Autonomous Vehicle External Communication Using a Multi-Pedestrian VR Simulator"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"8","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4958-2465","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Tram Thi Minh","family":"Tran","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Design Lab, The University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2173-9213","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Callum","family":"Parker","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Design Lab, The University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8299-3381","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Xinyan","family":"Yu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Design Lab, The University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9266-0126","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Debargha","family":"Dey","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Science, Cornell Tech, New York, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1661-7019","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Marieke","family":"Martens","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Industrial Design, Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, Netherlands"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9565-8240","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Pavlo","family":"Bazilinskyy","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Industrial Design, Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, Netherlands"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1998-2975","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Martin","family":"Tomitsch","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Transdisciplinary School, University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,9,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/cgf.13310"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/hbe2.113"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/SMC42975.2020.9282998"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_4_1","volume-title":"Driving Simulation Conference Europe","author":"Bazilinskyy Pavlo","year":"2020","unstructured":"Pavlo Bazilinskyy, Lars Kooijman, Dimitra Dodou, and Joost CF de Winter. 2020.
