Large language models (LLMs) offer a promising avenue, with increasing research exploring their educational utility. However, the challenge lies not only in establishing the efficacy of LLMs but also in discerning the nuances of interaction between learners and these models, which impact learners' engagement and results. We conducted a formative study in an undergraduate computer science classroom (N=145) and a controlled experiment on Prolific (N=356) to explore the impact of four pedagogically informed guidance strategies on the learners' performance, confidence and trust in LLMs. Direct LLM answers marginally improved performance, while refining student solutions fostered trust. Structured guidance reduced random queries as well as instances of students copy-pasting assignment questions to the LLM. Our work highlights the role that teachers can play in shaping LLM-supported learning environments.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3687038","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,11,8]],"date-time":"2024-11-08T15:52:40Z","timestamp":1731081160000},"page":"1-30","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":24,"title":["Guiding Students in Using LLMs in Supported Learning Environments: Effects on Interaction Dynamics, Learner Performance, Confidence, and Trust"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"8","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2878-3986","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Harsh","family":"Kumar","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2246-0094","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ilya","family":"Musabirov","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9668-3384","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Mohi","family":"Reza","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8755-8984","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jiakai","family":"Shi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0007-7302-0589","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Xinyuan","family":"Wang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9122-5242","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Joseph Jay","family":"Williams","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5941-4641","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Anastasia","family":"Kuzminykh","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2965-5302","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Michael","family":"Liut","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto Mississauga, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,11,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","unstructured":"[n. d.].
