A deeper exploration of the factors motivating players to invest time and money in these games would help game companies better cater to their target audience and increase profits. We conducted a reflexive thematic analysis of 20 semi-structured interviews with tabletop game players. Our analysis revealed five themes concerning purchasing decision influences: (1) childhood past experiences and cultural norms, (2) representation and inclusivity, (3) social connections and shared fun, (4) overcoming gameplay hindrances with digital assistance, and (5) economic constraints. These findings suggest that game companies should focus on presenting easily understandable information, minimizing idle time, and exploring opportunities for inclusivity in digital interactions to effectively engage players and drive sales. Based on our valuable insights into player motivations, we offer actionable recommendations for the tabletop games industry.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3700628","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,10,17]],"date-time":"2024-10-17T11:12:53Z","timestamp":1729163573000},"page":"1-29","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Rolling in Fun, Paying the Price: A Thematic Analysis on Purchase and Play in Tabletop Games"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"3","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7703-6234","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Joseph","family":"Tu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3564-2532","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Derrick","family":"Wang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0006-1279-9085","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lydia","family":"Choong","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0002-3767-0852","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Aj","family":"Abistado","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8138-7272","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ally","family":"Suarez","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2743-9844","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Stuart","family":"Hallifax","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5958-3576","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Katja","family":"Rogers","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4290-8829","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lennart","family":"Nacke","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,12,12]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_3_2_2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0907568207078330"},{"key":"e_1_3_3_3_2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/14459795.2014.966131"},{"key":"e_1_3_3_4_2","first-page":"44","volume-title":"Proceedings of the 2nd Annual IEEE International Workshop on Horizontal Interactive Human-Computer Systems","author":"Mahmud Abdullah Al","year":"2007","unstructured":"Abdullah Al Mahmud, Omar Mubin, Johanna Renny Octavia, Suleman Shahid, LeeChin Yeo, Panos Markopoulos, Jean-Bernard Martens, and Dima Aliakseyeu. 2007.
