Though recent scholarship in HCI focuses on equitable design practices, there is less focus on understanding the experiences of community-based nonprofit organizations (CBOs) when partnering with technology companies. In this paper, we focus on understanding the perspectives of CBOs by answering the following research question: What are the experiences of CBOs that have collaborated with technology companies? Through a series of design workshops with 18 participants who work at community-based nonprofits that have collaborated with technology firms, we identified four elements of community-industry collaborations that collectively shape the overall experience: divergences in cultural and organizational norms, ''setting the table,'' project relationship dynamics, and affective qualities. We conclude by discussing the power structures that impact community-industry collaboration and suggest reflective practices to guide equitable collaborations between CBOs and tech companies.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3710918","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,20]],"date-time":"2025-05-20T11:36:19Z","timestamp":1747740979000},"page":"1-31","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Towards Equitable Community-Industry Collaborations: Understanding the Experiences of Nonprofits' Collaborations with Tech Companies"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"9","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2819-1083","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sheena","family":"Erete","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"College of Information, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9872-1169","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Eric","family":"Corbett","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Google Research, New York, NY, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0002-5803-9613","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Natasha","family":"Smith-Walker","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Project Exploration, Chicago, IL, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2446-8022","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jay L.","family":"Cunningham","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Human Centered Design and Engineering, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6880-5740","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Erin","family":"Gatz","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Human Computer Interaction Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1880-3453","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Tina","family":"Park","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Partnership on AI, San Francisco, CA, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8447-6115","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Tam","family":"Perry","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Social Work & Institute of Gerontology, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6598-1733","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lauren","family":"Wilcox","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"eBay, San Jose, CA, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4915-0512","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Remi","family":"Denton","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Google Research, New York, NY, USA"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,2]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","unstructured":"2021. https:\/\/trickle.works\/blog\/tech-tactics-employee-retention-strategies\/"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s11266-013--9357--6"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/10510979609368482,URL"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3544548.3580916"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0305--750X(01)00027--4"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_6_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0899764000291S004"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_7_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s10551-011--1057--9"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_8_1","volume-title":"Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code","author":"Benjamin Ruha","unstructured":"Ruha Benjamin. 2019.
