Current emotion technologies are designed to support learners' emotional awareness and social needs; however, little is known about whether and how DHH learners could benefit from these technologies. Our study explores how DHH learners perceive and use emotion data from two collection approaches, self-reported and automatic emotion recognition (AER), in video-based learning. By comparing the use of these technologies between DHH (N=20) and hearing learners (N=20), we identified key differences in their usage and perceptions: 1) DHH learners enhanced their emotional awareness by rewatching the video to self-report their emotions and called for alternative methods for self-reporting emotion, such as using sign language or expressive emoji designs; and 2) while the AER technology could be useful for detecting emotional patterns in learning experiences, DHH learners expressed more concerns about the accuracy and intrusiveness of the AER data. Our findings provide novel design implications for improving the inclusiveness of emotion technologies to support DHH learners, such as leveraging DHH peer learners' emotions to elicit reflections.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3711013","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,3]],"date-time":"2025-05-03T01:35:05Z","timestamp":1746236105000},"page":"1-27","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["Inclusive Emotion Technologies: Addressing the Needs of d\/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners in Video-Based Learning"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"9","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0640-6883","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Si","family":"Chen","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Sciences, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Champaign, Illinois, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0009-3385-871X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jason","family":"Situ","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1535-1714","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Haocong","family":"Cheng","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Sciences, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, Illinois, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0005-1344-8095","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Suzy","family":"Su","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0009-2251-6458","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Desir\u00e9e","family":"Kirst","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Gallaudet University, Washington, DC, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0008-3771-3684","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lu","family":"Ming","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Gallaudet University, Washington, DC, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0005-5294-2352","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Qi","family":"Wang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Gallaudet University, Washington, DC, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9762-7181","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lawrence","family":"Angrave","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0399-8032","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yun","family":"Huang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Sciences, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, Illinois, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,2]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","first-page":"443","article-title":"Musical expertise modulates functional connectivity of limbic regions during continuous music listening.
