It explores recent trends in detecting these phenomena, highlighting current research that reveals a synergistic relationship between them. Additionally, it presents recent trends in the use of XAI methods to mitigate the occurrences of hateful land Fake contents in conversations. The survey reviews state-of-the-art XAI approaches, algorithms, modeling datasets, as well as the evaluation metrics leveraged for assessing model interpretability, and thus provides a comprehensive summary table of the literature surveyed and relevant datasets. It concludes with an overview of key observations, offering insights into the prominent model explainability methods used in hate speech and misinformation detection. The research strengths, limitations are also presented, as well as perspectives and suggestions for future directions in this research domain.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3711123","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,1,17]],"date-time":"2025-01-17T10:52:22Z","timestamp":1737111142000},"page":"1-37","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":20,"title":["Decoding Fake News and Hate Speech: A Survey of Explainable AI Techniques"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"57","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9696-2372","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Mikel K.","family":"Ngueajio","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Howard University, Washington, United States"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9815-9295","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Saurav","family":"Aryal","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Howard University, Washington, United States"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9020-3885","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Marcellin","family":"Atemkeng","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8524-3559","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Gloria","family":"Washington","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Howard University, Washington, United States"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3638-3464","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Danda","family":"Rawat","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Howard University, Washington, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_3_2_2","first-page":"609","volume-title":"Proceedings of SAI Intelligent Systems Conference","author":"Ngueajio M.
