In this article, we delve into the multifaceted domain of peering, providing a comprehensive overview of its fundamental elements. We investigate the various peering models and policies available to ISPs, as well as key players of the ecosystem. We also explore security risks associated with peering and available safeguards to mitigate them. Our goal is to review current industry practices and research literature to shed valuable insights into the complexities of ISP peering.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3715906","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,1,29]],"date-time":"2025-01-29T11:33:07Z","timestamp":1738150387000},"page":"1-37","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Resource Sharing on the Internet: A Comprehensive Survey on ISP Peering"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"57","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0005-9480-0969","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Anindo","family":"Mahmood","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Central Florida, Orlando, United States"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0387-7038","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Murat","family":"Yuksel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Central Florida, Orlando, United States"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_1_2_2","unstructured":"123 NET. 2024.
