Leveraging insights from persuasive technologies, we advocate that tailoring misinformation interventions to individual user profiles---accounting for variations in cognitive style, political ideology, and emotional state---can improve effectiveness. Two experimental studies with American participants are presented: the first study demonstrates that flagging false COVID-19--related headlines---with warnings and explanatory text---significantly reduces their perceived accuracy, particularly among users with high neuroticism and deliberative cognitive styles; the second study compares preemptive intervention strategies, revealing that a context-driven, prebunking approach is most effective in enhancing discernment and decision-making confidence, while also mitigating the influence of conspiracy beliefs. The findings contribute to the fields of human-computer interaction and digital misinformation by providing actionable insights into personalized strategies and offering a scalable framework for real-world application.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3726831.3726835","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,4,23]],"date-time":"2025-04-23T17:44:07Z","timestamp":1745430247000},"page":"1-7","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Rethinking Misinformation Mitigation: The Case for Personalized Digital Interventions"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"2025","author":[{"given":"Dipto","family":"Barman","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Trinity College Dublin"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,4,23]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s42087-020-00139-1"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"211","DOI":"10.1257\/jep.31.2.211","article-title":"Social Media and Fake News in the 2016 Election","volume":"31","author":"Allcott Hunt","year":"2017","unstructured":"Hunt Allcott and Matthew Gentzkow. 2017.
