However, distinct patterns in human sensing, influenced by various factors or contexts, challenge the generic neural network model's performance due to natural distribution shifts. To address this, personalization tailors models to individual users. Yet most personalization studies overlook intra-user heterogeneity across contexts in sensory data, limiting intra-user generalizability. This limitation is especially critical in clinical applications, where limited data availability hampers both generalizability and personalization. Notably, intra-user sensing attributes are expected to change due to external factors such as treatment progression, further complicating the challenges. To address the intra-user generalization challenge, this work introduces CRoP, a novel static personalization approach. CRoP leverages off-the-shelf pre-trained models as generic starting points and captures user-specific traits through adaptive pruning on a minimal sub-network while allowing generic knowledge to be incorporated in remaining parameters. CRoP demonstrates superior personalization effectiveness and intra-user robustness across four human-sensing datasets, including two from real-world health domains, underscoring its practical and social impact. Additionally, to support CRoP's generalization ability and design choices, we provide empirical justification through gradient inner product analysis, ablation studies, and comparisons against state-of-the-art baselines.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3729483","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,18]],"date-time":"2025-06-18T21:21:56Z","timestamp":1750281716000},"page":"1-34","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["CRoP: Context-wise Robust Static Human-Sensing Personalization"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"9","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0002-8937-3702","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sawinder","family":"Kaur","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0007-9535-3974","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Avery","family":"Gump","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5261-5440","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yi","family":"Xiao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6309-6845","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jingyu","family":"Xin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7016-6220","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Harshit","family":"Sharma","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0955-9495","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Nina R.","family":"Benway","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Maryland-College Park, College Park, Maryland, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9971-6321","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jonathan L.","family":"Preston","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0807-8967","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Asif","family":"Salekin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, USA"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,18]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"Workout types on apple watch. https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT207934","year":"2023","key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","unstructured":"Apple.
