Previous work embeds impossible objects in 3D, cutting them or twisting\/bending them in the depth axis. Cutting an impossible object changes its local geometry at the cut, which can hamper downstream graphics applications, such as smoothing, while bending makes it difficult to relight the object. Both of these can invalidate geometry operations, such as distance computation. As an alternative, we introduce Meschers, meshes capable of representing impossible constructions akin to those found in M.C. Escher's woodcuts. Our representation has a theoretical foundation in discrete exterior calculus and supports the use-cases above, as we demonstrate in a number of example applications. Moreover, because we can do discrete geometry processing on our representation, we can inverse-render impossible objects. We also compare our representation to cut and bend representations of impossible objects.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3731422","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,27]],"date-time":"2025-07-27T04:02:22Z","timestamp":1753588942000},"page":"1-10","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Meschers: Geometry Processing of Impossible Objects"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"44","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4391-8877","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ana","family":"Dodik","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0009-2981-1679","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Isabella","family":"Yu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1835-3707","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Kartik","family":"Chandra","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6243-9543","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jonathan","family":"Ragan-Kelley","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1925-2035","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Joshua","family":"Tenenbaum","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0107-5704","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Vincent","family":"Sitzmann","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7701-7586","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Justin","family":"Solomon","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,27]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/1179352.1141966"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-3-7091-6303-0_12"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s00371-002-0180-0"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_4_1","unstructured":"Vlad Alexeev. 2001.
