It categorizes papers into (i) Banking and risk management (ii) Finance (covering investment, asset and portfolio management; behavioral finance and time series), (iii) Financial markets and (iv) Insurance. Exploring methods such as Bayesian Causal Network, Granger Causality, and counterfactuals, the article emphasizes significance of causal inference in explaining predictions of AI\/ML models. This survey also recommends promising future research directions in the intersection of causal inference and these domains making it helpful for the professionals working therein.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3736752","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,23]],"date-time":"2025-05-23T07:25:58Z","timestamp":1747985158000},"page":"1-36","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["A Comprehensive Review of Causal Inference in Banking, Finance, and Insurance"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"57","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0787-0423","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Satyam","family":"Kumar","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay","place":["Mumbai, India"]},{"name":"Center for AI and ML, Institute for Development and Research in Banking","place":["Mumbai, India"]}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8387-6432","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yelleti","family":"Vivek","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Center for AI and ML, Institute for Development and Research in Banking","place":["Hyderabad, India"]}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0082-6227","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Vadlamani","family":"Ravi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Center for AI and ML, Institute for Development and Research in Banking","place":["Hyderabad, India"]}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5737-966X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Indranil","family":"Bose","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Neoma Business School","place":["Reims, France"]}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,12]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_3_2_2","unstructured":"2020.
