Within these universities, employees working in accessibility must mediate an unstable web of organizational and technological infrastructures. This study examines the government mandates, organizational structures, processes, and policies in a research university in Canada aimed at meeting the accessibility needs of its students. Our findings suggest that there is an interplay between informal and formal practices to navigate institutional systems. Technology serves as a mediator in the ''behind-the-scenes'' work that occurs at the intersection of infrastructures. Based on these findings, we provide recommendations to better support accessibility work in universities. We suggest the use of seamful design to support accessibility work, as it aligns with the dynamic nature of disability and distributed networks of accessibility work. We recommend designers foster interdependence to support workers who navigate overlapping infrastructures and breakdowns at the seams.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3757454","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,16]],"date-time":"2025-10-16T17:32:00Z","timestamp":1760635920000},"page":"1-27","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["Accessibility Work in Academia: Balancing Needs, Bridging Gaps, and Breaking Down Barriers"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"9","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0005-5195-7042","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Carolyn Kim","family":"Ly","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3026-9249","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Trevor","family":"Cross","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4367-2179","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Adrian","family":"Petterson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0005-2282-7556","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ishani","family":"Pandey","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4024-8871","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Priyank","family":"Chandra","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,16]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","volume-title":"Proceedings of the 2013 conference on Computer supported cooperative work. 67-78","author":"Abraham Joanna","year":"2013","unstructured":"Joanna Abraham and Madhu C Reddy. 2013.
