This paper shifts the focus towards the role of users' broader social context as a significant factor in engagement. Through an eight-week text messaging program aimed at enhancing psychological wellbeing, we recruited 20 participants to help us identify situational engagement disruptors (SEDs), including personal responsibilities, professional obligations, and unexpected health issues. In follow-up design workshops with 25 participants, we explored potential solutions that address such SEDs: prioritizing self-care through structured goal-setting, alternative framings for disengagement, and utilization of external resources. Our findings challenge conventional perspectives on engagement and offer actionable design implications for future DMH tools.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3757487","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,16]],"date-time":"2025-10-16T17:32:00Z","timestamp":1760635920000},"page":"1-35","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Investigating the Role of Situational Disruptors in Engagement with Digital Mental Health Tools"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"9","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9116-3766","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ananya","family":"Bhattacharjee","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9122-5242","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Joseph Jay","family":"Williams","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0846-9682","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Miranda","family":"Beltzer","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5149-7959","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jonah","family":"Meyerhoff","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2878-3986","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Harsh","family":"Kumar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0006-7825-4993","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Haochen","family":"Song","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5443-7596","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"David C.","family":"Mohr","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9986-3345","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Alex","family":"Mariakakis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8542-6913","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Rachel","family":"Kornfield","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,16]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","first-page":"1","volume-title":"Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"6","author":"Agapie Elena","year":"2022","unstructured":"Elena Agapie, Patricia A Are\u00e1n, Gary Hsieh, and Sean A Munson. 2022.
