These impairments degrade their quality of life and potentially make software use more challenging for them. However, there has been limited research on designing accessible software for cancer survivors, despite the rich literature on CSCW technologies for cancer survivors. To bridge this research gap, we conducted a formative study including a survey (n=46), semi-structured interviews (n=20), and a diary study (n=10) with cancer survivors. Our results revealed a wide range of impairments experienced by cancer survivors, including chemo brain, neuropathy, and visual impairments. Cancer survivors heavily relied on software for socialization, health purposes, and cancer advocacy, but their impairments made software use more challenging for them. Based on the results, we offer a set of accessibility guidelines that software designers can utilize when creating applications for cancer survivors. Further, we suggest design features for inclusion, such as health resources, socialization tools, and games, tailored to the needs of cancer survivors. This research aims to spotlight cancer survivors' software accessibility challenges and software needs and invite more research in this important yet under-investigated domain.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3757678","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,16]],"date-time":"2025-10-16T17:06:01Z","timestamp":1760634361000},"page":"1-28","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Toward Designing Accessible and Meaningful Software for Cancer Survivors"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"9","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9388-4156","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Kyrie Zhixuan","family":"Zhou","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Texas at San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0006-4343-0555","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Royta B.","family":"Iftakher","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Brooklyn College, City University of New York, New York, New York, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8200-4026","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sean P.","family":"Mullen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, Illinois, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0462-5716","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Rachel F.","family":"Adler","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, Illinois, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4362-3884","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Devorah","family":"Kletenik","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Brooklyn College, City University of New York, New York, New York, USA"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,16]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3491102.3517544"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.2196\/51522"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.2196\/37706"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/1878450.1878480"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","first-page":"387","volume-title":"Eighteenth Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS","author":"Afnan Tanisha","year":"2022","unstructured":"Tanisha Afnan, Yixin Zou, Maryam Mustafa, Mustafa Naseem, and Florian Schaub. 2022.
