We take advantage of derivative-based smoothing costs for parametric control of fidelity vs. simplicity tradeoffs, while also enabling stylization control in geometric and image spaces. The proposed pipeline is compatible with recent vector graphics generation and vectorization methods. We demonstrate the versatility of our approach with four applications aimed at the generation of stylized vector graphics: stylized space-filling path generation, stroke-based image abstraction, closed-area image abstraction, and stylized text generation.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3763345","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,4]],"date-time":"2025-12-04T17:15:39Z","timestamp":1764868539000},"page":"1-11","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Neural Image abstraction using long smoothing B-splines"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"44","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0509-3803","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Daniel","family":"Berio","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Goldsmiths, University of London, London, United Kingdom"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0001-5156-4549","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Michael","family":"Stroh","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Konstanz, Konstanz, Germany"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9036-6799","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sylvain","family":"Calinon","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Idiap Research Institute, Martigny, Switzerland"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-3221-8966","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Frederic","family":"Fol Leymarie","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Goldsmiths, University of London, London, United Kingdom"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5803-2185","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Oliver","family":"Deussen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Konstanz, Konstanz, Germany"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7082-7845","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ariel","family":"Shamir","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Reichman University, Tel Aviv, Israel"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,4]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","volume-title":"Proceedings of Graphics Interface.
