Simultaneously, Augmented Reality (AR) Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) can assist cyclists by presenting notifications within their field of view without diverting their attention to external devices. While previous studies have investigated these advantages, safety concerns have primarily limited them to lab settings, creating a notable gap in understanding their real-world feasibility. We conducted a user study with 20 participants on a shared-use outdoor path and explored the impact of text-based HMD notification placement (top, right, bottom), on attentional tunneling and cyclists' experiences. Our results suggested that while the bottom placement received higher scores for perceived safety and noticeability, HMD notifications induced attentional tunneling, regardless of placement. We discuss our findings and present design insights for future HMD systems aimed at enhancing cyclists' safety and experience.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3773071","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,11,13]],"date-time":"2025-11-13T08:12:18Z","timestamp":1763021538000},"page":"292-312","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Designing Augmented Reality for Cyclists: How Text-Based Notification Placements Influence Attentional Tunneling and Cycling Experience"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"9","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0004-9882-1305","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Linjia","family":"He","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Monash University, Melbourne, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0003-2823-4300","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Matthew","family":"Siegenthaler","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Monash University, Clayton, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0009-7102-8397","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lau Yiu","family":"Ho","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Monash University, Clayton, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0004-4183-4922","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lucas","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Monash University, Melbourne, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6525-2650","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Esther","family":"Bosch","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"German Aerospace Centre, Braunschweig, Germany"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6300-9035","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Thomas","family":"Kosch","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"HU Berlin, Berlin, Germany"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6695-4809","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Barrett","family":"Ens","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of British Columbia at Okanagan, Kelowna, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8894-8282","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sarah","family":"Goodwin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Monash University, Melbourne, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7831-2632","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Benjamin","family":"Tag","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8013-5989","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Don Samitha","family":"Elvitigala","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Monash University, Melbourne, Australia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,11,13]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/TVCG.2017.2735098"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"Proceedings of the 14th annual ACM symposium on User interface software and technology. 101-110","author":"Bell Blaine","year":"2001","unstructured":"Blaine Bell, Steven Feiner, and Tobias H\u00f6llerer. 2001.
