As interest in deep-sea missions grows - from ecological monitoring and resource management to defense and offshore energy - autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have become key enablers. These mobile robots must traverse large, complex terrains where visibility is minimal, and GPS is unavailable. Acoustic imaging, particularly synthetic aperture sonar (SAS), is a leading technique for underwater scene reconstruction, offering high spatial resolution with compact form factors. However, its widespread deployment remains limited by one critical constraint: the speed at which imaging can be performed.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3774505.3774511","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,30]],"date-time":"2025-10-30T22:19:07Z","timestamp":1761862747000},"page":"13-17","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Sparse is Fast: Accelerating Synthetic Aperture Sonar via Reduced Sampling"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"29","author":[{"given":"Yang","family":"Bai","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA"}]},{"given":"Harshvardhan","family":"Takawale","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA"}]},{"given":"Aritrik","family":"Ghosh","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA"}]},{"given":"Nirupam","family":"Roy","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,30]]},"reference":[{"issue":"1","key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","first-page":"97","article-title":"Ultrawideband underwater real-time 3-d acoustical imaging with ultra sparse arrays","volume":"42","author":"Chi Cheng","year":"2016","unstructured":"Cheng Chi, Zhaohui Li, and Qihu Li. 2016.
