While existing AI systems struggle to infer personal significance in meaning-making, manual organization often imposes substantial cognitive burden on users. Therefore, our study investigates: how human-AI collaborative systems can support meaning-making of personal memories and how such meaning-making enhances performance on downstream memory tasks. Through co-design workshops, we identified critical challenges in current meaning-making practices and derived actionable design guidelines. We then developed MemoryLib, a mixed-initiative interactive system that enables dynamic organization and interpretation of multimodal memories augmented through human-AI collaborative practices. Findings from a controlled user experiment demonstrated that MemoryLib significantly improved users' abilities to recall, establish relationships of, and reuse memory content. The study contributes a novel human-AI collaboration approach for everyday memory meaning-making and empirical evidence supporting the system's effectiveness in enhancing memory-related tasks.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3810195","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,15]],"date-time":"2026-06-15T17:06:41Z","timestamp":1781543201000},"page":"1-47","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["MemoryLib: A Human-AI Collaborative Approach to Support Personalized Memory Meaning-Making Process"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"10","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0001-2801-2199","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Xiangrong","family":"Zhu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), Guangzhou, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9737-1056","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jingwei","family":"Sun","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Lenovo Group, Beijing, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0004-0811-9505","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yuan","family":"Xu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), Guangzhou, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0000-0389-9099","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Huanyi","family":"Wan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), Guangzhou, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0002-9728-4523","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jiawen","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), Guangzhou, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3033-8881","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yancheng","family":"Cao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), Guangzhou, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6779-4920","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Liuxin","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Lenovo Group, Beijing, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7298-1694","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yu","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Lenovo Group, Beijing, China and Southeast University, Nanjing, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2058-2282","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Qianying","family":"Wang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Lenovo Group, Beijing, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8037-6301","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Xin","family":"Tong","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), Guangzhou, China and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,15]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","volume-title":"Toward an understanding of when prior knowledge helps or hinders learning. npj Science of Learning 6, 1","author":"Brod Garvin","year":"2021","unstructured":"Garvin Brod. 2021.
