Unfortunately, current compression standards often treat dynamic sequences as independent frames or rely on computationally expensive non-rigid registration, making them unsuitable for real-time applications or large-scale environments. In this paper, we present a novel end-to-end compression framework for dynamic Truncated Signed Distance Field volumes derived from captured 3D content, leveraging a representation that is temporally stable, easily parallelizable, and already widely used in scene reconstruction and volumetric fusion pipelines. We then adapt classic 2D video coding paradigms such as spatial coding via Discrete Cosine Transform and temporal coding using a real-time motion compensation pipeline to provide robust, real-time, and training-free encoding and decoding for 3D content. Extensive evaluations on human performance captures demonstrate that our codec achieves ~35% bitrate savings at equal distortion while operating in real time at 30 FPS, while stronger temporal coherence in large-scale synthetic environments yields up to 12\u00d7 bitrate reduction at equal distortion.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3811298","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,7,3]],"date-time":"2026-07-03T07:05:51Z","timestamp":1783062351000},"page":"1-14","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Implicit Surface Compression -- with Good Old Discrete Cosine Transform and Motion Compensation"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"45","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5018-3958","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Tao","family":"Jin","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Electrical and Computer Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0004-6320-5895","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Shengxi","family":"Wu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0005-6788-1302","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Tianshu","family":"Huang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Electrical and Computer Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8855-036X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Mallesham","family":"Dasari","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northeastern University, Boston, MA, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9508-2066","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Srinivasan","family":"Seshan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science Department, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2332-9450","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Anthony","family":"Rowe","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Electrical and Computer Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA"},{"name":"Bosch Research, Pittsburgh, PA, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2026,7,3]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","volume-title":"Discrete cosine transform","author":"Ahmed Nasir","year":"2006","unstructured":"Nasir Ahmed, T_ Natarajan, and Kamisetty R Rao. 2006.
