The words examined in this work in linguistics and cognitive science include the prepositions above\/below, inside\/outside, in front\/behind, before\/after, to the right\/to the left, and others. This book will be of greatest interest to those working on the knowledge representation and semantics of spatial relations as part of a natural language processing (NLP) project. Applications might include parts of the NLP interface to a scene analysis system or NLP interface to an expert system advice on, for example, airplane repair where the airplane parts are in various spatial relations to one another and to the person using the system. Thus workers in NLP interfacing of various types may be interested. A good French\/English dictionary may be needed to read Vandeloise although the language used is not difficult. Almost all of the issues and points examined by Vandeloise are directly applicable to English language semantics as well.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/44019.1058039","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,1,17]],"date-time":"2007-01-17T18:32:02Z","timestamp":1169058722000},"page":"17","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Book review: L'ESPACE EN FRANCAIS by Claude Vandeloise (Editions du Seuil)"],"prefix":"10.1145","author":[{"given":"Paul","family":"Creelman","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Dalhouse University Halifax, Nova Scotia This simple yet engaging book exam"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1988,4]]},"container-title":["ACM SIGART Bulletin"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/44019.1058039","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1145\/44019.1058039","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,18]],"date-time":"2025-06-18T21:15:14Z","timestamp":1750281314000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/44019.1058039"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1988,4]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"104","published-print":{"date-parts":[[1988,4]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/44019.1058039"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/44019.1058039","relation":{},"ISSN":["0163-5719"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0163-5719"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1988,4]]},"assertion":[{"value":"1988-04-01","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
