This cross-orientation suppression (COS) is exhibited when the orthogonal and optimal stimuli are presented to the same eye (monoptically) or to different eyes (dichoptically). A recent study suggested that monoptic COS arises from subcortical processes; however, the mechanisms underlying dichoptic COS were not addressed. We have compared the temporal frequency tuning and stimulus adaptation properties of monoptic and dichoptic COS. We found that dichoptic COS is best elicited with lower temporal frequencies and is substantially reduced after prolonged adaptation to a mask grating. In contrast, monoptic COS is more pronounced with mask gratings at much higher temporal frequencies and is less prone to stimulus adaptation. These results suggest that monoptic COS is mediated by subcortical mechanisms, whereas intracortical inhibition is the mechanism for dichoptic COS. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1152\/jn.00203.2005","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,4,21]],"date-time":"2005-04-21T00:25:12Z","timestamp":1114043112000},"page":"1645-1650","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":40,"title":["Cross-Orientation Suppression: Monoptic and Dichoptic Mechanisms Are Different"],"prefix":"10.1152","volume":"94","author":[{"given":"Baowang","family":"Li","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Matthew R.","family":"Peterson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Jeffrey K.","family":"Thompson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Thang","family":"Duong","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Ralph D.","family":"Freeman","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"24","reference":[{"key":"R1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1126\/science.275.5297.221"},{"key":"R2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Allison JD, Smith KR, and Bonds AB.
