In SOFT, different criteria are\nsimultaneously accounted by a novel <jats:italic>fuzzy gain function<\/jats:italic> which models expert knowledge\nto control the optimization process. The presented procedure is an adaptation of\n<jats:italic>Kohonen\u2032s self-organization algorithm<\/jats:italic> which is well suited for implementation on\nmassively parallel architecture for fast computing. The MCNC benchmark examples are\npresented to verify the performance and feasibility of SOFT. Comparisons are made\nwith the Hopfield network, SOAP and TimberWolf MC5.6. Experiments show that the\nproposed method yields an average of 17% improvement in total wire length compared\nwith previous methods.
