Principles of dynamic reconfigurability\nusing programmable logic and programmable interconnect are incorporated into\nrandom access memories to achieve this flexibility. We first present the design of a\nvariable width RAM (VaWiRAM) which is a simple example of a Field Programmable\nMemory Cell Array. The configuration of VaWiRAMs can be adjusted by setting a few\nconfiguration pins on the memory chip. A VaWiRAM reconfigurable between widths 1 and <jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>max\u2061<\/jats:sub> can be constructed with the extra cost of <jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>max\u2061<\/jats:sub> \u2013 1 pass gates, (<jats:italic>W<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>max\u2061<\/jats:sub>\/2) 2\u2010to\u20101\nmultiplexers, and \u2308log\u2061<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>[log\u2061<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(<jats:italic>k<\/jats:italic>)\u2009 + \u20091]\u2309\n mode pins. A novel scheme to overlap the address\npins with mode control pins and achieve the mode control with only one extra pin is also\npresented.
