The fundamental equation is the Dirac equation\nwhich takes into account also the electron\u2032s spin. However, this equation intrinsically\nalso incorporates positrons which play no role in applications in solid state physics. We\ngive a rigorous derivation of the Pauli equation describing electrons in a first order\napproximation of the Dirac equation in the limit of infinite velocity of light. We deal\nwith time\u2010dependent electromagnetic potentials where no rigorous results have been\ngiven before. Our approach is based on the use of appropriate projection operators for\nthe electron and the positron component of the spinor which are better suited than the\nwidely used simple splitting into \u2018upper (large)\u2019 and \u2018lower (small) component\u2019. We also\nsystematically derive corrections at second order in 1\/<jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> where we essentially recover the\nresults of the Foldy\u2010Wouthuysen approach.
