The approaches include\nextensions of \u201cupwind\u201d and artificial dissipation schemes, generalization of the traditional\nScharfetter \u2013 Gummel approach, Petrov \u2013 Galerkin and streamline\u2010upwind Petrov\nGalerkin (SUPG), \u201centropy\u201d variables, transformations, least\u2010squares mixed methods\nand other stabilized Galerkin schemes such as Galerkin least squares and discontinuous\nGalerkin schemes. The treatment is representative rather than an exhaustive\nreview and several schemes are mentioned only briefly with appropriate reference\nto the literature. Some of the methods have been applied to the semiconductor device\nproblem while others are still in the early stages of development for this class of applications.\nWe have included numerical examples from our recent research tests with\nsome of the methods. A second aspect of the work deals with algorithms that employ\nunstructured grids in conjunction with adaptive refinement strategies. The full benefits\nof such approaches have not yet been developed in this application area and we\nemphasize the need for further work on analysis, data structures and software to\nsupport adaptivity.
