A specific security-related concern that vehicular ad hoc networks face is how to keep communication alive in the presence of radio frequency jamming, especially during emergency situations. Multiple Input Multiple Output techniques are proven to be able to improve some crucial parameters of vehicular communications such as communication range and throughput. In this article, we investigate how Multiple Input Multiple Output techniques can be used in vehicular ad hoc networks as active defense mechanisms in order to avoid jamming threats. For this reason, a variation of spatial multiplexing is proposed, namely, vSP4, which achieves not only high throughput but also a stable diversity gain upon the interference of a malicious jammer.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1155\/2016\/8141204","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,10,27]],"date-time":"2016-10-27T17:07:28Z","timestamp":1477588048000},"page":"1-9","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["MIMO Techniques for Jamming Threat Suppression in Vehicular Networks"],"prefix":"10.1155","volume":"2016","author":[{"given":"Dimitrios","family":"Kosmanos","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Nikolas","family":"Prodromou","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Antonios","family":"Argyriou","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5360-9782","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"Leandros A.","family":"Maglaras","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computer Science and Informatics, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Helge","family":"Janicke","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computer Science and Informatics, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"311","reference":[{"key":"1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/MCOM.2008.4539481"},{"key":"2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/comst.2008.4564481"},{"key":"3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/surv.2010.033010.00024"},{"key":"4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.jnca.2013.02.036"},{"first-page":"63","volume-title":"Secure inter-vehicle communication: a need for evolution of vanet towards the internet of vehicles","year":"2016","key":"5"},{"key":"6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.14569\/ijacsa.2015.060414"},{"key":"7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s11235-010-9400-5"},{"key":"8","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/TVT.2014.2325831"},{"issue":"22","key":"10","first-page":"45","volume":"66","year":"2013","journal-title":"International Journal of Computer Applications"},{"key":"11","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s11277-013-1161-5"},{"key":"15","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/mvt.2015.2410341"},{"volume":"1, article 10","journal-title":"Architecture","year":"2013","key":"16"},{"key":"19","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/2043164.2018456"},{"key":"20","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/lcomm.2015.2440240"},{"year":"2005","key":"21"},{"key":"22","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/tmc.2010.133"},{"key":"23","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/TVT.2014.2317803"},{"key":"24","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/49.730453"},{"key":"25","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/twc.2010.01.081381"},{"issue":"3-4","key":"26","first-page":"128","volume":"5","year":"2012","journal-title":"International Journal on Advances in Systems and Measurements"}],"container-title":["Mobile Information Systems"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"http:\/\/downloads.hindawi.com\/journals\/misy\/2016\/8141204.pdf","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"http:\/\/downloads.hindawi.com\/journals\/misy\/2016\/8141204.xml","content-type":"application\/xml","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"http:\/\/downloads.hindawi.com\/journals\/misy\/2016\/8141204.pdf","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2016,10,27]],"date-time":"2016-10-27T17:07:28Z","timestamp":1477588048000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/misy\/2016\/8141204\/"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2016]]},"references-count":20,"alternative-id":["8141204","8141204"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1155\/2016\/8141204","relation":{},"ISSN":["1574-017X","1875-905X"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"1574-017X"},{"type":"electronic","value":"1875-905X"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2016]]}}}
