Multiscale entropy (MSE) of photoplethysmographic (PPG) pulse amplitudes may differ by diabetes status and hand activity. Of a middle-to-old aged and right-handed cohort without clinical cardiovascular disease, we controlled age, sex, and weight to select the unaffected (no type 2 diabetes,<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M1\"><mml:mi>n<\/mml:mi><mml:mo>=<\/mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=\"italic\">3<\/mml:mn><mml:mn fontstyle=\"italic\">6<\/mml:mn><mml:mo stretchy=\"false\">)<\/mml:mo><mml:mo>,<\/mml:mo><\/mml:math>the well-controlled diabetes (HbA1c &lt; 8%,<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M2\"><mml:mi>n<\/mml:mi><mml:mo>=<\/mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=\"italic\">22<\/mml:mn><\/mml:math>), and the poorly controlled diabetes (HbA1c \u2265 8%,<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M3\"><mml:mi>n<\/mml:mi><mml:mo>=<\/mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=\"italic\">22<\/mml:mn><\/mml:math>) groups. MSEs were calculated from consecutive 1,500\u2009PPG pulse amplitudes of bilateral index fingertips. The<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M4\"><mml:mtext>small-,\u2009\u2009<\/mml:mtext><mml:mtext>medium-,<\/mml:mtext><\/mml:math>and large-scale MSEs were defined as the average of scale 1 (<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M5\"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">M<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">S<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">E<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn mathvariant=\"normal\">1<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msub><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math>), scales 2\u20134 (<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M6\"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">M<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">S<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">E<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn mathvariant=\"normal\">2<\/mml:mn><mml:mtext>\u2013<\/mml:mtext><mml:mn mathvariant=\"normal\">4<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msub><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math>), and scales 5\u201310 (<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M7\"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">M<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">S<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">E<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn mathvariant=\"normal\">5<\/mml:mn><mml:mtext>\u2013<\/mml:mtext><mml:mn mathvariant=\"normal\">10<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msub><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math>), respectively. Intra- and intergroups were compared by one- and two-sample<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M8\"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>t<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math>-tests, respectively. The dominant hand<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M9\"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">M<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">S<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">E<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn mathvariant=\"normal\">5<\/mml:mn><mml:mtext>\u2013<\/mml:mtext><mml:mn mathvariant=\"normal\">10<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msub><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math>was lower in the poorly controlled diabetes group than the well-controlled diabetes and the unaffected (1.28 versus 1.52 and 1.56,<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M10\"><mml:mi>p<\/mml:mi><mml:mo>=<\/mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=\"italic\">0.01<\/mml:mn><mml:mn fontstyle=\"italic\">9<\/mml:mn><\/mml:math>and 0.001, resp.) groups, whereas the nondominant hand<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M11\"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">M<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">S<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">E<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn mathvariant=\"normal\">5<\/mml:mn><mml:mtext>\u2013<\/mml:mtext><mml:mn mathvariant=\"normal\">10<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msub><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math>was lower in the well- and poorly controlled diabetes groups than the unaffected group (1.35 and 1.29 versus 1.58,<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M12\"><mml:mi>p<\/mml:mi><mml:mo>=<\/mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=\"italic\">0.00<\/mml:mn><mml:mn fontstyle=\"italic\">8<\/mml:mn><\/mml:math>and 0.005, resp.). The<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M13\"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">M<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">S<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">E<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn mathvariant=\"normal\">1<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msub><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math>of dominant hand was higher than that of nondominant hand in the well-controlled diabetes (1.35 versus 1.10,<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M14\"><mml:mi>p<\/mml:mi><mml:mo>=<\/mml:mo><mml:mn fontstyle=\"italic\">0.048<\/mml:mn><\/mml:math>). In conclusion, diabetes status and hand dominance may affect the MSE of PPG pulse
