of Sensors"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2019,10,30]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>A new fluorescence probe L was rationally designed and synthesized for the recognition of Cu<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> ions by the combination of coumarin hydrazide and 2-acetylpyrazine. The photochemical properties and selectivity of L for Cu<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> ions in a CH<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>CN\/HEPES (3\u2009:\u20092, <mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M1\"><mml:mi>v<\/mml:mi><mml:mo>\/<\/mml:mo><mml:mi>v<\/mml:mi><\/mml:math>) buffer were investigated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra. A highly selective and sensitive response of L for Cu<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> ions over other competing metal ions was observed with limit of detection in 3\u00a0<jats:italic>\u03bc<\/jats:italic>M. The coordination stoichiometry of L to Cu<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> ions was determined to be 1\u2009:\u20091 by the UV-vis absorption spectrum, the fluorescence titrations, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, L was applied successfully for recognition of intracellular Cu<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> ions in living
