This paper proposes a generic cryptanalysis model based on deep learning (DL), where the model tries to find the key of block ciphers from known plaintext-ciphertext pairs. We show the feasibility of the DL-based cryptanalysis by attacking on lightweight block ciphers such as simplified DES, Simon, and Speck. The results show that the DL-based cryptanalysis can successfully recover the key bits when the keyspace is restricted to 64 ASCII characters. The traditional cryptanalysis is generally performed without the keyspace restriction, but only reduced-round variants of Simon and Speck are successfully attacked. Although a text-based key is applied, the proposed DL-based cryptanalysis can successfully break the full rounds of Simon32\/64 and Speck32\/64. The results indicate that the DL technology can be a useful tool for the cryptanalysis of block ciphers when the keyspace is restricted.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1155\/2020\/3701067","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,13]],"date-time":"2020-07-13T23:37:13Z","timestamp":1594683433000},"page":"1-11","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":54,"title":["Deep Learning-Based Cryptanalysis of Lightweight Block Ciphers"],"prefix":"10.1155","volume":"2020","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7868-7197","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"Jaewoo","family":"So","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electronic Engineering, Sogang University, Seoul 04107, Republic of Korea"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"311","reference":[{"key":"1","year":"2017"},{"key":"3","year":"1993"},{"key":"6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/access.2019.2900765"},{"key":"7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/tit.2019.2903796"},{"key":"8","first-page":"1","year":"2018"},{"key":"9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1049\/iet-ifs.2016.0241"},{"key":"10","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/access.2019.2894337"},{"key":"11","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/access.2019.2912929"},{"key":"13","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/tc.2017.2699190"},{"key":"15","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.neunet.2014.09.003"},{"key":"18","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.ins.2008.02.016"},{"key":"27","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1155\/2018\/6868506"},{"key":"28","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-3-030-26951-7_6"},{"key":"29","year":"2016"},{"key":"32","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/0161-119691884799"},{"key":"33","first-page":"77","volume":"10","year":"2011","journal-title":"WSEAS Transactions on Computers"},{"issue":"3","key":"34","first-page":"307","volume":"9","year":"2012","journal-title":"International Journal of Computer Science Issues"},{"key":"36","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3390\/cryptography3010001"},{"key":"38","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1155\/2018\/5160237"}],"container-title":["Security and Communication Networks"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"http:\/\/downloads.hindawi.com\/journals\/scn\/2020\/3701067.pdf","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"http:\/\/downloads.hindawi.com\/journals\/scn\/2020\/3701067.xml","content-type":"application\/xml","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"http:\/\/downloads.hindawi.com\/journals\/scn\/2020\/3701067.pdf","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,13]],"date-time":"2020-07-13T23:37:15Z","timestamp":1594683435000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/scn\/2020\/3701067\/"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,13]]},"references-count":19,"alternative-id":["3701067","3701067"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1155\/2020\/3701067","relation":{},"ISSN":["1939-0114","1939-0122"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1939-0114","type":"print"},{"value":"1939-0122","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,13]]}}}
