This paper is mainly study reliability importance measures considering performance and costs (RIMPC) of maintenance and downtime of the mechanical hydraulic system (MHS) for hydraulic excavators (HE) with energy regeneration and recovery system (ERRS) and suggests the scheduled maintenance interval for key components and the system itself based on the reliability <jats:inline-formula>\n                     <a:math xmlns:a=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M1\">\n                        <a:msub>\n                           <a:mrow>\n                              <a:mi>R<\/a:mi>\n                           <\/a:mrow>\n                           <a:mrow>\n                              <a:mi>i<\/a:mi>\n                           <\/a:mrow>\n                        <\/a:msub>\n                        <a:mfenced open=\"(\" close=\")\">\n                           <a:mrow>\n                              <a:mi>t<\/a:mi>\n                           <\/a:mrow>\n                        <\/a:mfenced>\n                     <\/a:math>\n                  <\/jats:inline-formula>. In the research, the required failure data for reliability analysis is collected from maintenance crews and users over three years of a certain type of hydraulic excavators. Minitab is used for probable distribution estimation of the mechanical hydraulic system failure times, and the model is verified to obey Weibull distribution. RIMPC is calculated by multiplying the reliability <jats:inline-formula>\n                     <e:math xmlns:e=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M2\">\n                        <e:msub>\n                           <e:mrow>\n                              <e:mi>R<\/e:mi>\n                           <\/e:mrow>\n                           <e:mrow>\n                              <e:mi>i<\/e:mi>\n                           <\/e:mrow>\n                        <\/e:msub>\n                        <e:mfenced open=\"(\" close=\")\">\n                           <e:mrow>\n                              <e:mi>t<\/e:mi>\n                           <\/e:mrow>\n                        <\/e:mfenced>\n                     <\/e:math>\n                  <\/jats:inline-formula> and weighting factor <jats:inline-formula>\n                     <i:math xmlns:i=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M3\">\n                        <i:msub>\n                           <i:mrow>\n                              <i:mi>W<\/i:mi>\n                           <\/i:mrow>\n                           <i:mrow>\n                              <i:mi>i<\/i:mi>\n                           <\/i:mrow>\n                        <\/i:msub>\n                     <\/i:math>\n                  <\/jats:inline-formula> and then compared with other classical importance measures. The purpose of this paper is to identify the weakest component for MHS in the design stage and to make appropriate maintenance strategies which help to maintain a high reliability level for MHS.
