Low\u2010power wide\u2010area network (LPWAN) technologies, notably Sigfox, Long Range (LoRa), and narrowband Internet of Things (NB\u2010IoT), are fundamental enablers driving this transformation across diverse smart systems, including agriculture, urban infrastructure, and environmental monitoring. Despite numerous investigations into LPWAN technologies, comprehensive systematic evaluations focusing explicitly on their implementation in varied smart systems remain limited. This systematic review meticulously analyses LPWAN deployments in smart environments by examining 129 rigorously selected articles from a total of 750 publications dated from 2017 to 2024. Our analysis presents nuanced architectural insights and explores specific applications, highlighting the suitability of distinct LPWAN technologies for diverse IoT scenarios. Furthermore, the review identifies critical trends and gaps, emphasizing areas such as network scalability, energy efficiency, security, and seamless integration with evolving IoT applications. Anticipating significant technological advancements by 2030, this study underscores the transformative potential of LPWAN technologies, advocating for the development of versatile and globally scalable LPWAN frameworks.
