The question is then posed: what is the\nmost general boundary value problem which can be posed in\nvariational form with the boundary conditions appearing naturally?\nSpecial cases of two-point problems in one-dimension and some higher\ndimensional problems are addressed. There is a deep connection with\nself-adjointness for the linear case. Further cases under which a\nLagrangian may or may not exist are explained.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1155\/s1173912600000158","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,8]],"date-time":"2007-03-08T07:44:28Z","timestamp":1173339868000},"page":"193-204","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Variational methods for boundary value problems"],"prefix":"10.1080","volume":"4","author":[{"given":"B.","family":"Tsang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mathematics, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand"},{"name":"Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"S.
