Laser-induced room temperature\n    luminescence of air-equilibrated or argon-purged solid\n    powdered samples of benzophenone adsorbed onto the two\n    modified celluloses, which will be named C12-1500 and\n    C12-1700, revealed the existence of a vibrationally structured\n    phosphorescence emission of benzophenone in the case where\n    ethanol was used for sample preparation, while a nonstructured\n    emission of benzophenone exists when water was used instead of\n    ethanol. The decay times of the benzophenone emission vary\n    greatly with the solvent used for sample preparation and do\n    not change with the alkylation degree in the range of\n    1500\u20131700 micromoles of alkyl chains per gram of cellulose.\n    When water was used as a solvent for sample preparation, the\n    shortest lifetime for the benzophenone emission was observed;\n    this result is similar to the case of benzophenone adsorbed\n    onto the \u201cnormal\u201d microcrystalline cellulose\n    surface, with this latter case previously reported by Vieira\n    Ferreira et al. in 1995. This is due to the more efficient\n    hydrogen abstraction reaction from the glycoside rings of\n    cellulose when compared with hydrogen abstraction from the\n    alkyl chains of the modified celluloses. Triplet-triplet\n    transient absorption of benzophenone was obtained in both\n    cases and is the predominant absorption immediately after\n    laser pulse, while benzophenone ketyl radical formation occurs\n    in a microsecond time scale both for normal and modified\n    celluloses.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1155\/2007\/18278","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,1,24]],"date-time":"2008-01-24T14:38:07Z","timestamp":1201185487000},"page":"1-5","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Surface Photochemistry: Benzophenone as a Probe for the Study of Modified Cellulose Fibres"],"prefix":"10.1155","volume":"2007","author":[{"given":"L.
