The concern about water contamination and the consequent human exposure has encouraged the development of new methods for PAHs removal. The purpose of this work was to study the feasibility of a degradation process of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) in aqueous matrices by oxidation with Fenton reagent. A laboratory unit was designed to optimize the factors which may influence the process: pH (3.5 to 6.0), temperature (30 to<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msup><mml:mn>70<\/mml:mn><mml:mo>\u00b0<\/mml:mo><\/mml:msup><mml:mtext>C<\/mml:mtext><\/mml:math>),<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msub><mml:mtext>H<\/mml:mtext><mml:mn>2<\/mml:mn><\/mml:msub><mml:msub><mml:mtext>O<\/mml:mtext><mml:mn>2<\/mml:mn><\/mml:msub><\/mml:math>(20 to 150\u2009mg<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msup><mml:mtext>L<\/mml:mtext><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-<\/mml:mo><mml:mn>1<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msup><\/mml:math>),<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msup><mml:mtext>Fe<\/mml:mtext><mml:mrow><mml:mn>2<\/mml:mn><mml:mo>+<\/mml:mo><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msup><\/mml:math>concentration (2.75 to 5.50\u2009mg<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msup><mml:mtext>L<\/mml:mtext><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-<\/mml:mo><mml:mn>1<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msup><\/mml:math>), and the initial concentration of the pollutant (10 to 100\u2009<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:mi>\u03bc<\/mml:mi><\/mml:math>g<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msup><mml:mtext>L<\/mml:mtext><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-<\/mml:mo><mml:mn>1<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msup><\/mml:math>). The pH did not influence significantly the results in the range studied. An increase in temperature from 30 to<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msup><mml:mn>70<\/mml:mn><mml:mo>\u00b0<\/mml:mo><\/mml:msup><mml:mtext>C<\/mml:mtext><\/mml:math>improved the removal efficiency from 90% to 100%. The same effect was observed for ferrous ion concentrations from 2.75 to 5.50\u2009mg<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msup><mml:mtext>L<\/mml:mtext><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-<\/mml:mo><mml:mn>1<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msup><\/mml:math>(increase from 78% to 100% removal). The<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msub><mml:mtext>H<\/mml:mtext><mml:mn>2<\/mml:mn><\/mml:msub><mml:msub><mml:mtext>O<\/mml:mtext><mml:mn>2<\/mml:mn><\/mml:msub><\/mml:math>concentration played a double role during the process: from 20 to 50\u2009mg<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msup><mml:mtext>L<\/mml:mtext><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-<\/mml:mo><mml:mn>1<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msup><\/mml:math>an increase in the removal efficiency was achieved, but for higher concentrations (<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:mo>&gt;<\/mml:mo><\/mml:math>50\u2009mg<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msup><mml:mtext>L<\/mml:mtext><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-<\/mml:mo><mml:mn>1<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msup><\/mml:math>) the degradation is lower. This study proved that the degradation of benzo(a)pyrene by Fenton's reagent is a viable
