We examined the effects of a short-term team handball-based training programme on physical fitness and metabolic and cardiovascular health of sedentary 33-55-year-old former male team handball players. Twenty-four participants were divided into team handball (THG;<jats:italic> n<\/jats:italic>=15) and control groups (CG;<jats:italic> n<\/jats:italic>=9) and evaluated at baseline and postintervention. During 12 weeks, THG performed 2-3 60-min recreational team handball matches weekly (average: 2.2 \u00b1 0.7), and CG maintained an inactive lifestyle. Average heart rate (HR) during matches was 80 \u00b1 7%<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M1\"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">H<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">R<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">m<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">a<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">x<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msub><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math>, with peak values of 91 \u00b1 6%<mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" id=\"M2\"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">H<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">R<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">m<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">a<\/mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant=\"normal\">x<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msub><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math>. A time-by-group interaction was shown in aerobic performance (<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>=0.016), postural balance (<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>=0.019), maximum oxygen uptake (VO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>max) (<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>=0.023), resting HR (<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>&lt;0.001), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>=0.048), and fasting blood glucose (<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>=0.052) in favor of THG. THG improved aerobic performance (80%,<jats:italic> p<\/jats:italic>&lt;0.001), VO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>max (14%,<jats:italic> p<\/jats:italic>&lt;0.001), and postural balance (27%,<jats:italic> p<\/jats:italic>=0.018). Decreases in resting HR (16%,<jats:italic> p<\/jats:italic>&lt;0.001) and fasting blood glucose (7%,<jats:italic> p<\/jats:italic>=0.015) and increases in HDL cholesterol (11%,<jats:italic> p<\/jats:italic>=0.002) were found in THG.
