Curves from multiple sessions and speakers were overlaid before analysis onto a common (x, y) coordinate system by extensive preprocessing of the curves including: extension (padding) or truncation within session, translation, and truncation to a common x range. Four PCs plus a mean level allow accurate representation of coronal tongue curves, but PC shapes depend strongly on the degree of padding or truncation. The PCs successfully reduced the dimensionality of the curves and reflected vowel height, consonant context, and physiological features.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1159\/000066066","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2003,4,15]],"date-time":"2003-04-15T10:10:37Z","timestamp":1050401437000},"page":"108-133","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":20,"title":["Principal Components Representation of the Two-Dimensional Coronal Tongue Surface"],"prefix":"10.1515","volume":"59","author":[{"given":"Eric","family":"Slud","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Mathematics Department , University of Maryland, College Park, Md., and b Department of Oral and Craniofacial Biological Sciences , Department of Orthodontics, University of Maryland Dental School, Baltimore, Md. , USA"}]},{"given":"Maureen","family":"Stone","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Mathematics Department , University of Maryland, College Park, Md., and b Department of Oral and Craniofacial Biological Sciences , Department of Orthodontics, University of Maryland Dental School, Baltimore, Md. , USA"}]},{"given":"Paul J.","family":"Smith","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Mathematics Department , University of Maryland, College Park, Md., and b Department of Oral and Craniofacial Biological Sciences , Department of Orthodontics, University of Maryland Dental School, Baltimore, Md. , USA"}]},{"given":"Moise","family":"Goldstein Jr.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Mathematics Department , University of Maryland, College Park, Md., and b Department of Oral and Craniofacial Biological Sciences , Department of Orthodontics, University of Maryland Dental School, Baltimore, Md. , USA"}]}],"member":"374","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2005,1,18]]},"reference":[{"key":"2021062305174602657_j_000066066_ref_001_w2aab3b7c10b1b6b1ab1ab1Aa","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Abeles, M.; Goldstein, M.: Multispike train analysis.
