The identification of the yeast convertase kexin as a prototype\nprocessing enzyme led to the discovery of the mammalian convertases designated\nfurin, PCI and PC2. Whereas furin is ubiquitously expressed, PCI and PC2 are found only\nin endocrine and neural tissues and cell lines. In man and mouse, the genes coding for furin,\nPCI and PC2 reside on three different chromosomes. The analysis of the intracellular processing\nof PCI and PC2 and the removal of their pro-segment is presented, together with a\nsummary of the cleavage specificity of these enzymes for precursors such as pro-opiomelanocortin\n(POMC) and human pro-renin. The distinct tissue distribution of PCI and PC2 and\ntheir coregulation with POMC in the pituitary neurointermediate lobe adds credence to their\nphysiological role as convertases involved in the tissue-specific processing of precursor proteins.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1159\/000468901","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,8,11]],"date-time":"2017-08-11T17:21:58Z","timestamp":1502472118000},"page":"271-284","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":73,"title":["Mammalian Neural and Endocrine Pro-Protein and\nPro-Hormone Convertases Belonging to the Subtilisin Family\nof Serine Proteinases"],"prefix":"10.1159","author":[{"given":"N.G.","family":"Seidah","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"R.","family":"Day","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"M.","family":"Marcinkiewicz","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"S.","family":"Benjannet","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"M.","family":"Chr\u00e9tien","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"127","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,8,11]]},"container-title":["Enzyme"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/karger.com\/article-pdf\/doi\/10.1159\/000468901","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,4,30]],"date-time":"2026-04-30T12:46:05Z","timestamp":1777553165000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/karger.com\/article\/doi\/10.1159\/000468901"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2017,8,11]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1159\/000468901","archive":["Portico"],"relation":{},"ISSN":["0013-9432","2504-2564"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0013-9432","type":"print"},{"value":"2504-2564","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2017,8,11]]}}}
