The simulation demonstrates, using an African hunter-gatherer group (the !Kung san) as a case study, the way in which population stability may arise from culturally framed, micro-level decision making by women about spacing of births. According to the simulation, population stability as an emergent property has different implications, depending on resource density. Data on Australian hunter-gatherer groups are presented that support the implications of the simulation. !Kung san micro-level cultural rules on incestuous marriages are shown to have macro-level consequences in the form of marriages between residential camps. Between-camp marriages have significant implications for access to resources and thereby for population dynamics of the group as a whole. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/106454603322694852","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2004,1,15]],"date-time":"2004-01-15T22:02:34Z","timestamp":1074204154000},"page":"419-434","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["Emergent Properties in Small-Scale Societies"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"9","author":[{"given":"Dwight W.","family":"Read","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Anthropology, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA 90035,"}]}],"member":"281","reference":[{"key":"p_4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1086\/281776"},{"key":"p_5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0162-3095(86)90002-6"},{"key":"p_6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/00324728.1983.10408866"},{"key":"p_8","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/00438243.1972.9979533"},{"key":"p_9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/19485565.1961.9987465"},{"key":"p_13","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1126\/science.7352291"},{"key":"p_17","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.2307\/2137459"},{"key":"p_18","first-page":"16","volume":"38","author":"Read D.
