There Rosen presents a theoretical framework to define living systems; given this definition, he goes on to show that living systems are not realizable in computational universes. Despite being well known and often cited, Rosen's central proof has so far not been evaluated by the scientific community. In this article we review the essence of Rosen's ideas leading up to his rejection of the possibility of real artificial life in silico. We also evaluate his arguments and point out that some of Rosen's central notions are ill defined. The conclusion of this article is that Rosen's central proof is wrong. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/106454606775186392","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,12,24]],"date-time":"2005-12-24T00:24:25Z","timestamp":1135383865000},"page":"117-134","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":27,"title":["A Category Theoretical Argument against the Possibility of Artificial Life: Robert Rosen's Central Proof Revisited"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"12","author":[{"given":"Dominique","family":"Chu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Computing Laboratory, University of Kent, CT2 7NF Canterbury, United Kingdom"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Weng Kin","family":"Ho","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computer Science, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, United Kingdom"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"281","reference":[{"key":"p_4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1749-6632.2000.tb06276.x"},{"key":"p_5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/106454600300103683"},{"key":"p_9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/cplx.10032"},{"key":"p_11","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0022-5193(03)00034-1"},{"key":"p_13","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/106454600300103674"},{"key":"p_18","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1006\/jtbi.2000.2121"},{"key":"p_20","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/106454601317296988"},{"key":"p_25","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0303-2647(74)90031-8"},{"key":"p_26","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1093\/bib\/2.3.258"}],"container-title":["Artificial Life"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.mitpressjournals.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1162\/106454606775186392","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2021,3,12]],"date-time":"2021-03-12T21:32:07Z","timestamp":1615584727000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/direct.mit.edu\/artl\/article\/12\/1\/117-134\/2515"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2006,1]]},"references-count":9,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2006,1]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1162\/106454606775186392"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1162\/106454606775186392","relation":{},"ISSN":["1064-5462","1530-9185"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1064-5462","type":"print"},{"value":"1530-9185","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2006,1]]}}}
