The purpose of the workshop was to assemble artificial life researchers interested in social learning and cultural evolution into one group so that we could focus on recent work and interesting open questions. Our discussion related to both the mechanisms of social learning and cultural evolution and the consequences and influence of social learning and cultural evolution on living systems. We present the contributions of our workshop presenters and conclude with a discussion of the more important open questions in this area. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/artl_a_00250","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,1,25]],"date-time":"2018-01-25T19:52:06Z","timestamp":1516909926000},"page":"5-9","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Social Learning and Cultural Evolution in Artificial Life"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"24","author":[{"given":"Chris","family":"Marriott","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Washington"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"James M.","family":"Borg","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing and Mathematics, Keele University."}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Peter","family":"Andras","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing and Mathematics, Keele University."}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Paul E.","family":"Smaldino","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Cognitive and Information Sciences, University of California."}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"281","reference":[{"key":"bib3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/artl.2009.15.3.Bullinaria.010"},{"key":"bib4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1162\/ARTL_a_00237"},{"key":"bib7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3758\/BF03196002"},{"key":"bib13","unstructured":"Santos, F.\n C. & Pacheco, J.\n M.
